Purchased a 98 Eclipse GST

I purchased a 98 Eclipse GST on Monday night that has a bad vehicle speed sensor. I was thinking I would just pull the motor out of it and build it to put in the VR4, but when I got there, the car looked too nice to take apart haha. Going to replace the speed sensor this week, if that fixes it, that car may be my new DD while the VR4 is down.

So now I am still looking for a motor for the VR4, but I’ll have an Eclipse to toy around with in the mean time!

I don’t really intend to do much to the Eclipse, but I’m going to track the builds for both the VR4 and Eclipse here going forward since I do have a couple of things I would like to do with the Eclipse too. One of those things is that I am going to get a Forced Four shift box for it and try to set up some paddle shifters. I also plan on upgrading to a 20G turbo for a little bit of extra fun. ATX ~350-400HP Eclipse will make for a fun daily driver. We’ll see what happens with the Eclipse, but right now it is bone stock and will stay that way for a little while so that the funds will be going towards the VR4.

VR4 plan is still a 4G63 swap with a billet Holset HX40 on E85. I’m still planning to keep it a manual 5 speed currently. 600-700awhp will be pretty nice for that car, I’ll still be able to drive it on the street and enjoy it at the track as well.

Engine bay part out in progress!

Engine bay part out in progress!

I’ve pulled and sold a lot of stuff already and working on getting the engine and transmission out in the next couple of weeks. Making room for the new 2.4L built 4G motor and transmission that I’ll be picking up next weekend for it!

I found a good deal on a built 2.4L, so the plan has changed a little from my original idea of a built 6 bolt block. I’m still planning to go with a billet HX40 turbo for now and should hopefully have it all back together with all of the new stuff by the first week of February if all goes as planned! After I get it all back together with the new stuff, it will be tuned then going to paint probably closer to the end of February.

Update 12/11/2016

I received my Cianci widebody vented fenders that I’ve been wanting for years! I’ve also purchased a 99 front bumper over the weekend that should arrive any day now. I had been going back and forth with the idea of doing a 99 front end for awhile now and decided to give it a go. I’m going to keep my 98 front bumper to modify it and make it accept the 99 corner lights and I’ll most likely put it back on the car after that. I like the 98 front end more, but like the 99 corner lights more. I’ll try out the 99 front end and see if it grows on me.

I got my 5 bar AEM MAP sensor installed in the back of my plenum over the weekend. I want to try to get the AEM all set up for my 6G motor so that I can learn a little bit before switching to the 4G motor. I’m still waiting for an aluminum pipe that I ordered to go in place of where my GM MAF used to be to weld in the bung for the IAT sensor to. Car will probably be down until the second week of January due to time restraints of the holidays.

I’m still searching for a built 6 bolt 4G63 and transmission/transfer case for it. I’m very excited to get this thing all together!

I’ve sold a lot of the aftermarket parts that I had installed on my car including the Chrome ECU, LCDBC, MAFT, and some other random little things.

Update 12/06/2016

Well, the car is down for the time being. I sold my Chrome ECU and bought a stock ECU to throw in there until I had time to get my AEM EMS v2 set up. Sadly, the stock ECU ended up being bad and the car was not drivable with it. Thankfully the seller returned it and I got my money back, but the car is down for now until I can figure out this AEM stuff. Hopefully I’ll get it back up and running this weekend if all goes well.

Update 11/22/2016

Over the weekend, I got a lot of work done!

I cut out the 1G headlight buckets that I modified and welded in the front end from a 2G. Over all, cutting up the 1G buckets was a good way to mock up the 2G front end, but having to have custom brackets hold in the headlights and it being a pain to try to get the headlights aimed well without a proper place to sit was just getting on my nerves, so I decided to go ahead and do the job right. It looks better, everything lines up better and I am much happier.

I also installed new Kicker speakers to replace my back speakers, replaced the charcoal back interior panels with true black interior panels, and replaced my 1G sail panels with 99 sail panels.

I’ve also decided to change my build direction after researching a bit in to Eric’s 4G swapped VR4. His thread on 3si was incredibly insightful and led me to my decision to go with a built 6 bolt 4G63. I haven’t decided on what turbo I am getting yet, but the plan is to get around 650awhp~ on E85. It is less than I was planning to do on my 6G72, but it also will result in the car losing around 200lbs, which makes up for it big time.

I’m pretty excited about the direction change I am selling off a lot of the parts I’ve been saving up. I’m going to return under my hood to close to stock while I start gathering up parts for the swap.

Update 09/20/2016

Installed Walbro 450 E85 pump today and the hose that goes to the fuel hat from the hub under the car has been replaced with an SS line now.

Weekend plans are going to be installing the other SS lines at the filter, the FuelLab AFPR and my 1000cc injectors.

Update 09/18/2016

I finally bit the bullet and just bought a set of 99 headlights. I sold my 94 headlights that I was going to do the halo mod on and I’m going to sell my 2G white lexan ones as well. I’m pretty excited now, my exterior vision for this car is finally coming to life. 99 headlights, 99 sail panels, 99 rear garnish, 98 front bumper, smoked 2G corner lights, and 1G 3000GT side skirts. Exterior will be complete very soon, once I finish installing this stuff! I am going to do the halos in the 99 headlights as well. The plan is to have the car get a fresh coat of paint in March (assuming winter is done here.)

Interior is coming along nicely as well. Most of the interior is now converted over to true black interior. I plan to get some custom seat skins for the front seats and to delete the back seats soon as well. I have some nice custom floor mats on order right now as well.

It is all coming together! Motor build is in progress, new fuel setup is going to be installed over the course of the next few days as well.

Update 09/13/2016

Over the weekend, I installed my 2G true black dash, steering wheel, center console, and aluminum dash vents. That was a LOT more work that I thought it was going to be when I started. I’m glad it is done, the interior looks 100% better now. I ended up breaking the 3 center gauges while trying to put on aftermarket gauge faces, so I am just waiting for the replacement to arrive for that, but over all I am pretty happy with everything.

I also ordered a double din Sony radio that I am waiting to arrive. This will replace my single din Pioneer radio and will look a lot nicer. I’m getting really close to the goal, I’m going to finish ordering the pistons, rods and bearings over the next few weeks and then have the motor built.
